Have Morel mushrooms growing under the olive trees in mulch. First time I recall seeing them.

Say what? $61,000 for one truffle? I'm gettin' me a dog that can sniff them out. Who needs the stock market to make money? hahaha

I remember when I was younger every 5 or so years I’d hear of a transplant family that would get hurt eating the wild mushrooms in the Bay Area.
When I say hurt I mean really bad, some would even die and some would learn about dialysis.

Yeah, no thank you.
You have to really know what you are doing to do this and I know that I don’t have those skills.

We had to cut down a big oak tree that split at the crotch this last year.
We chipped a lot of it up and used it as ground cover and as soon as the rains came we had hundreds and hundreds of mushrooms all over the chips.
They look really tasty but….
Yeah no!

I'm with ya, Andy. No thanks This is one time I'll trust mushrooms from the grocer and even then, I'm cautious.

With all the rain we've gotten, I see a few mushrooms/toadstools popping up in the lawn. I'll put on the gloves and pull them. Ewww, fungus lawn!

Are salamanders in the same family as banana slugs? We were challenged to kiss one of those disgusting things at science camp when I was a kid. I passed. That was one contest I didn't have any interest in winning. They might make great fish bait, though.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! And "beauty" is more than a cute fuzzy puppy/kitten face! Just because you don't possess the eyes to see it doesn't mean a species is worthless. Salamanders are interesting, beautiful creatures. Being amphibians, they tend to be good bellwethers for environmental health...that YOU depend on. There are more around than most people realize partly because many are nocturnal or fossorial: they spend the majority of their time buried in moist soil, under leaf litter, logs, rocks, your cement patio, etc, not bothering anyone. Obviously, they're very sensitive to temperature and humidity. CA's long standing drought has probably decimated them either directly or indirectly because they lose their ability to breed successfully. Development and habitat loss has doomed a number of unique species all over the western states.

Before you ridicule any creature, why not open your mind and heart and learn a little bit about it? You might discover a vast new world of value.

As for eating wild mushrooms, there is something known as the Foolproof Four:
