The sad part is that Compton actually is in California and honestly isn't even the worst part of California. I'd much rather live in Compton than in complete garbage areas of Stockton, Fresno, Bakersfield, San Bernardino, Palmdale or Hesperia.
I know someone who thinks San Bernardino essentially "represents" California.

Which doesn't really make much sense. Usually the people living flyover country point to either SF or LA and think the insanity there is representative of the entire state due to the large population and performative antics coming from those politicians. San Bernardino is just a gigantic exurb.

No I wasn't referring to "Tulemutt" because I understood he was being sarcastic, but I was referring to other Negative-Doomsday Posters on City-Data who always try to put California down.

Fresno,Bakersfield,Palmdale I actually think is safer and has nicer areas than Compton...Now i'm not sure about San Bernardino or Hesperia since I haven't been there in years.

Fresno has some really nice areas around the north side, near Clovis. It's nicer and cleaner than the nicest parts of Las Vegas (Summerlin, Henderson), plus you're so close to Kings Canyon, Sequoia NP and Yosemite.

If Fresno were located in any other state, it would be considered a large and prosperous city in its own right.

Palmdale is geographically a large city and very spread out. From the western tip of the city limits to the eastern tip of the city limits is 18 miles across, so it covers a lot of area. I live in Palmdale and the median income in my zip code (93551) is $98,181. There are parts of the neighborhood where that rises to $105,667 and $109,632.

Now, compare that to median household income in:

Boise ID -- $87,500

Henderson, NV -- $79,611

Salem, OR -- $62,185

Summerlin, NV -- $89,187

Gilbert, AZ -- $99,154

I've never claimed Palmdale was glamorous or special. I like it because it has offered me a decent middle class lifestyle close to a large global city (LA). It's got a little something for everyone, lifestyle-wise. I live in a neighborhood with nurses, engineers, law enforcement, fire department, retirees, veterans, educators and civil service workers of various stripes. It's very safe and the city is very proactive about making improvements to quality of life.

Our neighboring city of Lancaster is struggling a bit more with quality of life issues, but things have gotten better there too.

Yup there are so many nice areas in the Central Valley, and yeah Fresno is just like any other Mid-Sized City anywhere in the Country, but because it's in California it doesn't get the spotlight like Los Angeles,San Francisco,San Diego or even Sacramento does.

I've been to the Lancaster-Palmdale Area and those 2 cities also has some nice areas and a lot of land for more future housing developments, and their close to L.A,so those 2 cities have a lot of economic potential because of it's close proximity to L.A.and abundant developable land

The Lancaster-Palmdale Area are also probably the only cities of it's size in L.A County that experiences chilly/cold winters down to the 30's,20's and teens at times for the low temps.
