This is rich (pun intended).

“ A California family that earned millions of dollars just by recycling cans and bottles has now been accused of multiple felonies that could lead to years behind bars.

In a felony complaint filed this month, state prosecutors charged eight family members in Riverside County with defrauding the state by importing used bottles and cans from Arizona — some 178 tons in 8 months — and recycling them in California.‘

There is no more blatant redistribution of wealth scheme than bottle recycling fees.

No surprise here. According to the article, which was originally published on Business Insider and then another link to Consumer Watchdog points to the epicenter of fraud in this state. Shocker!

CRV is stamped right on the can so even the "local" places were double dipping.

Reading more about this, and if I got it right, there's apparently a personal limit of 25lbs of non-CRV goods you can recycle in state. But it looks like the people being charged with this owned a recycling center and were fudging computer data that the state's CRV funds come from. That's where the fraud part comes into play -that and conspiracy charges. They weren't just taking pickup truck loads from Arizona to get money here. The scam was a bit more sophisticated.
