Will the big nuclear disaster in Japan have a negative impact on the viability of these upcoming big water desalination plants that are supposed to turn the ocean into a vast supply of water for the West coast?

Desal removes particulates, but cannot purify irradiated water. Radioactive particles exist at the molecular level, far far finer than the particulate level.

The radiation from Fukushima is not present in California waters in any amount that poses a concern for human health. Nor will it ever be.

And before anyone goes ahead and posts any links to hysterical gloom 'n' doom posts elsewhere, be advised that every single point within them has already been thoroughly debunked on numerous occasions. So don't waste your time.

To repeat, desal does not operate that the molecular level.

SOURCE

Desalination, desalinization, and desalinisation refer to any of several processes that remove some amount of salt and other minerals from saline water. More generally, desalination may also refer to the removal of salts and minerals,[1]

Desal operates at a much high level than molecules.

So in answer to your question, no, they are ions. There is a difference, Do you understand the difference?

Don't listen to the government or people telling you everything is okay. Fukushima is going to have long term effects on the worlds population and food sources.
