I am not totally sure. Ventura just seems like more of a fun place with the pier, the surfing, the California Street/Main Street area...it's been a while (15 years maybe) since I've been there....just an impression. It's also only about 30 minutes maybe from UCSB.

How is Santa Barbara for foreigners? Is the local population nice towards outsiders?

Visit before you commit yourself to years there. I personally hate the area, but many love it.

Here's the real question on my mind:

Are there many single women in their 20's who aren't students at UCSB in the Santa Barbara area? How is the area for dating?
Yes, my best friend still lives in Santa Barbara and his girlfriend never went to UCSB like he and I did. You do have to remember though that the City of SB only has about 120,000 people with the outlaying areas (Goleta, Carpenteria, Gaviota, etc..) maybe adding another 120,000 for a total population of 240,000. That's not large but the small pop is part of the charm.

That said SB has a large tourist economy so lots of people from SoCal, yes even single women, come up there are the time. Even the local junior college, Santa Barbara City College attracts a lot of people from around the state who come and live there many because they want to party in IV. There is a big graphic ares and photography school in Carp which sttracts a lot of the artsy types as for grad students at UCSB... Most of them decide not to live in IV and instead rent places downtown or on foothill. If you're concerned about dating opportunities you will not be disappointed.

PS IV is mostly 18-25 year olds so if you fall in that catagory you'll still fit in but if you're old then that then you'll probably feel like the old man of IV and it is time to move your social events outside of IV.

No, not really. You'll kill yourself in traffic. Well, once you get out of LA county the traffic is really light (unless it is a friday then the roads out of LA are jammed packed in every direction as people try to get away from LA for the weekend) but you're going to wish for death on the stretches from Santa Monica to around Thousand Oaks.

My 2 cents. Live in SB. Think about it, there are tons of women, it is a large university. Undergrads will be in their early 20s, but then if that is too young, there are gonna be a bunch of grad students who will be more in the mid to late 20s. You will be fine living in SB.

Not sure where Oerdin is getting the population numbers.

Santa Barbara has 92,000
Goleta has 55,000
Carpinteria has 14,000
Carpinteria Valley (Unincorporated) has 19,000
Montecito has 10,000

Total area population: 190,000

Ventura has 100,000
Oxnard has 182,000
