Hello.

I have a question. I may be moving to CA from the east coast...I own a quaker parrot whom I love SO much... I just found out there are illegal in CA as they are considered "pests"...My parrot is clipped and doesn't even fly around! He is a PET, not a PEST!! The thought of rehoming him breaks my heart... So I am wondering and debating, maybe I could fly into Oregan or another border state and drive in with my parrot. Are there any places where there AREN'T border check points and I could just drive through?? I know many people have taken their quakers through the border by just covering them up, but I would be very nervous to do that I think...

Anyone have any info?? thank you.

I remember the check point between Reno and Sacremento. I don't remember one when we drove up to Oregon though. I am thinking you should be able to find something about it if you used a search engine.

Are these birds not allowed at all in California? How will you get Vetrinary care for him if that is the case.

Why can't parrots be imported into California? But hardly anyone gets stopped at the check points so you should be OK.

Not all parrots are illegal there. Quakers are. The stupidest most useless law EVER. They should allow for permits for PETS and require that they be kept clipped! If I HAVE to rehome him, I will... But it will BREAK my heart...

As for vets, there are vets who will still treat the bird. I was even thinking of dyeing his feathers and calling him something else!!

Didn't have a check coming down from Oregon, but I don't advocate breaking the law either.

With the budget cuts, I expect many of these check stations to be closed most of the time. In the past, it is a simple "are you bringing any fruits or plants into the state"? You say "No" and you're on your way. Takes 10 seconds. Unless they have visual evidence you are lying, they can't and won't do anything. (There was a rumor years ago these inspection stations were also looking for illegal drugs, but I think that turned out to be an urban myth).

Yeah, but what if they see or hear the bird? My heart would break if I had to hand over my pet. I'd probably turn around & try to find a remote road to cross over into California.
