I'm a 24 year old college senior with a liberal arts background, finishing up my senior year online. I can complete it from any location, so I figure now is as good a time as any.

Can somebody give me a ballpark of a somewhat rational move? I've got roughly 6 grand right now and a Honda with 160K miles on it, in good shape for it's age.

Thanks so much in advance. It's a tough balance between taking a risk and ending up homeless in a few month.

the farther north you go, the lower cost of living, but what do you plan to do for money? As most know, jobs are not easy to come by. The bay area will be totally out of the question and how much longer do you think you will be able to drive your over used Honda?

That being said, both Mendacino and Humbolt are liberal and very pretty, there just are no jobs. 6000 isn't doing to last to long.

Check Craigslist for each area to get a sense of housing market and jobs available.

bay area is pretty expensive. i'd not move back with less that 10k in the bank, and plan on spending a great deal of that during the couple months it might take getting a job. and that's with having a good network already in place.

in your situation i'd look further north most likely, but keep in mind the job availability/prevailing wages as opposed to living expenses. i think closer to sacramento has a decent balance in that area usually, but dunno with the current state fiscal mess.
