If you like to shop and you could come to LA, go to the garment district (or the Fashion district -- whatever they call it now). There are so many incredible clothing bargains there. I've even met people who've flown into LA just to shop there. Right now, in particular, the clothing wholesalers are hurting because of the recession so you can get some unbelievable bargains. Since it's 90+ blocks, if you want some ideas of the cross streets to shop around, send me a PM and tell me what you would be looking for and I'll tell you which streets or areas are probably best.

I think Yosemite is safe if you stay on the major trails.

Do you ever watch Huell Howser and California Gold on PBS? (It's KCET down here. I don't know what it is in the bay area.) He covers a lot of interesting places on his shows. All this week he's been covering the area around San Simeon and Cambria. You can get a lot of good travel tips just by watching his shows.

How about visiting Carmel as well as Monterey? Carmel has a lovely beach area & promenade. Monterey's Aquarium is also very nice.
Also Santa Cruz has a nice boardwalk and beach for visitors.

My guess is she wanted to make it clear she did not want you tagging along.
