There are a lot of shrubs and trees across the vast state of California.

If you know your plants, what do you see in this photo?

Just twigs - but maybe that's enough.

That's demonweed. Anyone who touches this with bare skin suffers horrendous sexual side effects. You did use gloves when you picked the sample, correct?

Post the pic here:UBC Botanical Garden Forums
and you should get a quick response.

UBC is one of the other forums I visit often. But I posted here just to see how the CA locals fare. I already know the species for the twigs.

The gardening and horticulture enthusiasts would probably identify it correctly, but other people in California could identify it as being one of three things, depending on the area they live in.

No, it's not redwood, and it's not juniper, as far I can tell... I think it's some sort of succulent.

You narrowed that one down pretty close if California still considers both the Coast Redwood and Giant Sequoia as the state tree.

The twig on the top is Coast Redwood. And the twig on the bottom is Giant Sequoia.

On Tuesday, I photographed 3 Coast Redwood twigs for a redwood page. Here are all three side by side. The higher up the Coast Redwood canopy, the shorter the needles. And they lay flat. The second image below is a closeup of the upper canopy twig.

That's what i thought.
But my memories of school days anxiety and being wrong kept me from answering.
I pull them (the coastal redwood twigs) out of my dogs tail constantly.
