Yes, that's true about them being babysitters. And a lot of them admitted to as much when I worked there.

I will say that not all are idiots. Some, maybe even a majority, are actually very good and professional and manage to do a great job walking the tightrope between not letting the inmates get away with crap while not abusing their power or giving inmates or other staff members a lot of attitude.

But that type of job attracts a disproportionate number of people who get high on power trips. That's true for any position in a prison. But the prison guards are the worst because they have the most power in that institution.

But even if 100% of them were top notch professionals, their pay and benefits are just not in line with reality.

Basically cops, firefighters & prison guards in ca make a very good living. I know a firefighter in beaumont who said his salary isnt that great. HA....he makes a good living but spoils his 3 teen kids big time & his wife spends money like it grows on trees. Anyways...My cousins ex wife worked as a nurse in a all female prison in so.ca. She told me women inmates were always hitting on her & many faked a illness just to see her. She said some of the female inmates were ugly as sin & some were quite pretty & young. She said the young inmates (late teens, 20,s) were often harassed & sexually assulted by the lesbians, lifers & nasty women. She told me a few stories incl one young women being assulted with a broom handle in the showers. Im sure you get the picture. DONT do the crime & you wont do the time.

I fear the answer is all of the above. The Unions want more employees so they have more dues to buy more politicians. They have become the rulers. Schools have zero tolerance and feed the juvenile courts and detention centers with customers who grow up to feed the prison guards. They always need more money, more teachers, more cops, more prison guards. They have arrest quotas so the courts stay busy. The only way to stop the craziness is to vote no more funds to the unions. Don't listen when they cry about taking care of students or letting out criminals, they never take care of kids and there are plenty of non violent criminals to release.

Don't lose sight of who sold the state civil service to the public employee unions in the first place about 30 years ago.

Here's a hint. He works in the Horseshoe in the Capitol and has a dog named Sutter, or is that his wife? I get confused sometimes. He probably does too.

And? What are the "people" going to do about it? Absolutely nothing. As long as they are in Kalifornia, getting welfare, health care, and child care for free (Of course, not free, tax payer money), no one is going to do a damn thing about it. Nothing. Zip. Zilch. Notta.

I'll come back to this forum in 10 yrs and someone will be posting the same, old, worthless BS. Just like the employee pension programs. A year ago it was the hot item. Screaming, yelling, etc. Now? Nothing.

NOTHING will change in this state. Its socialist, will be socialist, and always will be/

This is one of many reasons why ca is in a 20 billion dollar deficit. I believe its going to get alot worse in ca before it starts to get better. Something has got to done & now. Enough is enough. We need a govenor/legislature that will stand up to the prison, public & teachers union in ca. Their answer to everything is just raise taxes which they will try again this year. DISCUSTNG!!!!
I have to disagree this time.
Have you ever spent 10 minutes with a felon?
$70,000 a year is equal to $35 a hour. Do you have any idea what happens to a prison guard during a riot?
These inmates are disgusting. I have friends who work in the prisons, these felons listen to everything. They store up any/all info and try to extort/blackmail everyone they touch. One friend is a psychiatrist, he gets death threats, dead animals on his porch.
This is one job that does not end after 9 to 5.

You can't pay CO's enough in my opinion, and I am a California taxpayer. I'd like to see you guys last three days in Pelican Bay.

Washington state - which is also a very liberal, very blue state, but which is more fiscally responsible than California - doesn't pay its prison guards anywhere near what California pays them.

Maybe that's why WA is one of the very few prosperous western states.

The CCPOA are the single most corruptive force in the state. Their effective capture of the legislature and practically all state government offices should horrify conservatives, liberals, independents, and anyone with at least a few working brain cells. They are one major reason why CA teeters on the precipice of insolvency

I seriously doubt there are enough prison guards to make a dent in the state's budget even if you paid them each $500K/year. You're sniffing up the wrong tree. The real budget buster as in most states is Medicaid.

And here is the problem with this state. Everyone wants to blame "public employee's" for its demise. The demise is in all of the social entitlement programs, NO ONE wants to pay for, but EVERYONE wants.
