It seems as if Stockton is a miserable area to be in, but why? What makes it different than any other city?

Its Stockton, that's why.

If there's anything that unifies San Franciscans and Angelenos its provincialism. Anything not on the coast, except for maybe Sacramento, is not worthy of consideration. Hence the reason, at least in LA/OC, the Inland Empire gets made fun of all the time.

Very Hot, High Crime, Horrible Air quality not much to do, 2 hour drive to the Bay Area because of the traffic.

The Central Valley is more akin to Nevada than coastal California. Much fewer good-paying jobs and a lot more farms. It's not great, but no worse than, say, Phoenix.

Well it was named America's 2nd most MISERABLE city after Detroit by forbes, they give a few reasons for that:

Stockton is aesthetically unpleasant, has high crime, and is boring. It is unclear what, if anything, there is to recommend it.

been there many times, and it's really got too much crime, the city has more car theft than any other in the state!

Actually Modesto has been the worse for car theft lately.

Fresno has not been the worse in years.
