I have a misdemeanor possession of marijuana and paraphernalia charge on my criminal record. I finished paying/serving a little under 2 years ago.
If I try to enter Canada either from a Washington border or a Montana border and get turned back. What happens? Do they just say you can't come in and send you back to the US? Or do they harass the crap out of you for 24 hours? Or is it worse?
Someone who this has happened to can you explain what exactly happens?
If its no to bad I think I'm going to try to get in anyways.
If you get turned back it doesn't take all that long but you'll have to pass back through US Customs on the way back and be delayed there while you explain why never actually left the country.
If you drive down the road and try again at another crossing you will be looking at some more severe consequences though.

I got turned back in 2005 because of a previous DUI and they just made me turn around and go back. I don't remember having to go through US customs, but I must have. Bottom line: Be prepared to get turned away if you have any kind of criminal record, no matter how minor the offense. I made the mistake of planning a big trip to Toronto and had the whole thing flushed down the toilet in a matter of minutes.
Save yourself a big hassle and call the border you plan on crossing and ask them what they think. If the guy says its ok come on up but tactfully get his name so if you do come up and they start giving you a hassle you can request to speak with the officer you talked to on the phone.
But as i said before,it dont look good..

Maybe it varies by physical layout at each crossing. The ones by me if you get turned around you join the main flow of traffic entering US Customs. There may be some that send you back on a path that bypasses it.
