What is the highest income tax rate in Canada? Are there local income taxes in some cities?

Oh, yeah, and there are no city income taxes in Canada like you have in NYC.

Also, local sales taxes are quite rare as well. The only you would have is a local add-on to the gas tax in some metro areas to finance regional public transit. Montreal and Vancouver have this I think.

I'll trade two for five any day of the week. Plus, my two is federally tax deductable, since I live in a state with no income tax.

There are provincial sales taxes in most provinces, although Alberta is the exception. PEI has sales tax, but it doesn't apply to clothing, so that saves some money for residents of the Island. Most provinces have higher sales taxes than what you'd be used to in the States (I'm assuming you're American).

There's also federal Goods and Services Tax (GST). It may or may not be applicable depending upon the good or service in question.

Are people on public assistance exempt from paying taxes on groceries like they are in the United States? In some states, ALL people are exempt from sales taxes on groceries.

As far as I know there is no sales tax for anyone on groceries in Canada, at least there isn't here in BC.

GST is tagged onto EVERYTHING.

But there is some relief. Canadians making under a certain threshold get a GST refund based on a estimate of what was spent (based on your income earned).
