living in manitoulin islands(ontario,canada) (crime, neighbourhood, theatres)

Are you planning on living there year round ? Are you still working, or are you retired ?
It's a lovely place, as far as scenery is concerned, BUT unless you are self employed, OR have a ongoing source of income.....It's a hard place to survive in. Jobs are VERY hard to find, and the locals have that just about sewed up. It is also somewhat isolated, especially in winter. Roads closed due to snow drifts, are a regular happening. The residents have to go "off island ' to get to a department store, usually by driving all the way to Sudbury. Depending on where you are on the island, that can be a two hour drive, one way.
Some of the things that a city dweller thinks of as normal, are not to be found up there. No movies, no professional sports teams, no arts scene, no fine dining, and for sure no night life, unless you consider country and western music in a old fashioned bar to be a cultural experience ?
To sum it up......A nice place to visit in the summer, but no place to be in the winter.
Why do you plan to move to the middle of nowhere with nothing? You child will be lonely growing up.

Canada is still a predominantly rural country after all, and guess what; those rural dwelling children have friends aplenty of the BEST kind. No harm ever came to a young person by having to walk a mile to visit and interact with a friend for an afternoon of playing outside.
Not everyone is looking for a neighbourhood where you see limited daylight between tall buildings and count among the major activities for youngsters, riding the elevator from the third floor to the fourteenth floor to spend four hours on an X-Box swilling sugar drinks.
Have you ever even been onto the Manitoulin Island?
It's out of the way which might be the exact thing a modern family wanting to bring up a child without the obvious detrimental urban influences is looking for. It's not the back of beyond of northern Canada by any means though.
Manitoulin is very rural, and the First Nation population is extremely high. One of my online game friends was from there but moved to Sudbury. It's a very depressing place. I grew up in the woods too, and I wouldn't wish it on the kids either. Alcoholism is a significant problem there. Living closer to Sudbury is a better alternative

No need to be so worked up.
I don't recommend such a remote place for many practical reasons. Even in a city like Toronto, fewer than half of the population actually live in buildings with elevators, so stop being so dramatic.
Your links are more for tourists. Maybe you should provide something such as great schools, hospitals, grocery stores, movie theatres, restaurants or other places a family actually need on a regular basis.
Speaking of "playing outside", what about the remaining 6 months of the year a kid can't do that? What will he do?
IN my first post in this thread, I pointed out that unless the OP is either self employed in a trade that is in demand in that part of the Province, or he has an unlimited private income, The Island is not a good idea.
