At the opening ceremony of the Thousand Islands bridge attended by Franklin Roosevelt and Mackenzie King, the US president made this amazing statement:
"This garden spot of nature, this bridge stands as an open door. There will be no challenge at the border. There will be no guard to ask a countersign. Where the boundary is crossed the only words must be 'Pass, friend'." Thousand Islands
Fear used to perpetrate the building of a huge boondoggle of security buraucracies has, as just one casualty, the closing of the gate in the fence between two friendly neighbours back yards.
The far greater impact has been to the rights and freedoms of Americans themselves. We should muster a sizable dollop of sympathy for what they've become compared to that once great beacon they were to the rest of the world.
As Lady Jessica said, "Fear is the mind killer." She forgot to mention is fear is also a money maker for the few and a dredful monetary and social cost for the many.
One time just exiting the bridge on the US side I saw an animal that is supposed to be extinct. An eastern red wolf ran across the road right in front of us. It's still my top animal sighting to me.
