Newfoundland's unemployment rate is the highest in the country and the government needs to have a strong fiscal presence to keep it viable... tries to create employment, etc. Many Newfoundlanders are moving to Alberta to find work as skilled workers as it is just not worth it to stay there.
Newfie's (as they're commonly referred to) are very friendly people. You won't have any problems there. You will just have a hell of a time trying to understand them!!! (heavy accents).

I find east coast Newfoundlanders have a mild accent. West coasters - can be a real challenge to understand.
"The people of Newfoundland are among the friendliest and most accepting I've encountered in a reasonable amount of world travel. I sincerely doubt you'd have many problems."
It amazes me how hypercritical people get by pretending race doesn't matter at all. Just out of curiosity, how many of the "race doesn't matter" white guys will choose to live in a neighborhood where 80% of the residents are black and feel completely comfortable, putting crime rates aside?
The OP does have his right to ask questions like "are there many black people" considering he may put his wife and daughter on the street, as statistically speaking, there is a high correlation between racial composition of a neighborhood and crime rate, no offense to any black men and women.
We are supposed to be politically correct, but oftentimes our own behavior doesn't really reflect what we claim.
It goes the same for US states such as Idaho and North Dakota, where unemployment rate remain at under 5% vs national average of 9.5%. However, having the lowest unemployment rate doesn't mean the local economy is sanguine or job markets is better. It might only indicate local industries are not tight correlated with the macroenvironment, which means, when economy is great, they don't get any better either. This is especially true for many small economies which don't do a lot of business with others.
Just imagine a fishing village where the sole industry is fishing for everyone's own consumption, unemployment won't budge a bit if the entire economy is crashing, but that doesn't mean if you go there, you will land a job.
