I thought this was a joke at first, but apparently these people are serious. The CBC is an enormous waste of taxpayers' money and pretty much redundant in the current social media environment. When you think of all of the popular shows nowadays nothing the CBC is producing comes remotely close. It's only really purpose had become broadcasting hockey, but even that has been lost. Now it seems to be trying to make up for this with speed skating, which nobody really cares about. Although it's a Canadian institution, it's completely lost its legitimacy because it's become so agenda-driven. Personally I hope that the CBC is shut down.
So you think publicly funded sub-par programming and biased, if not sometimes intentionally false news reporting makes the CBC a "pillar of our democracy"?

Ditto. Well said. Even America has National Public Radio, and it is one of the best radio programs in America.
I like CBC but in America they can choose whether or not to pay for NPR, PBS, etc. We shouldn't be taxed to pay for it. NPR is the perfect example of how it can be done without forced payment.

It's much harder to emulate the NPR model in Canada, because we have a much smaller audience/population, so some services have to be supported by public funds. NPR has so many large regional stations and programs, along with massive regional audiences and donors.
Also, a lot of local NPR stations frequently have funding troubles, and have to resort to pure listener donations just to keep things running. I remember in Boston, the local NPR station did a donation drive every 3 months that took up hours of programming and time everyday. The hosts were literally on the verge of begging for listener money, and while I understand the need for funding, the frequency of donation drives/funding shortfalls took up valuable program time and became really quite annoying (e.g. Spring Break Funding drive, Summer Funding Drive, Holiday donations, etc. etc.)
