My heart goes out to the residents of Ft. McMurray... what a disaster! I'm definitely going to donate money to the red cross to help people there rebuild their lives.
This will be all the more complicated by the fact so many are there from another part of the country and living in what many of us would consider temporary housing in any case. The housing situation was over-loaded before this, now it will be critical.
I see a situation where portable housing of any kind, from no longer used portable classrooms to the double wide that couldn't be sold in an Ontario trailer park getting dismantled and shipped there.
We do not have a FEMA equivalent that stockpiles trailers for instances such as this. Thinly walled and poorly insulated units that normally ply the highways for tourism would not be the ideal to use for this happenstance in any case as they would gobble through propane and breed illness's like a petrie dish.
Insurance companies had better do the right thing and settle accounts quickly so as to get the buildings replaced as quickly as workers can rally out there to build them.
Some of those workers laid off from oil jobs can probably turn on a dime and become framers and drywallers in the blink of an eye.

... that normally ply the highways for tourism IN SUMMER, too.
The fire season started a month early because of the very dry conditions (El Nino 2016). The fire started on Sunday (cause unknown), and it was so dry that there were concerns that a spark from an ATV could start a fire. Today it's going to be 30C (88F), and there are concerns about strong winds. Worst case scenario is 50kph winds and a cold front moving North that sparks thunderstorms without rain.
With all the overspending from provincial and federal governments for social reasons, and now required spending for disaster relief, I think we can add several millions to each of the expense sheets.

I wonder if all the workers who originally aren't from Ft. Mac will have to go back to where they came from because there won't be enough temporary housing available in the area for them

Many employees have been laid off from the oilsands, so there should be housing available in the camps.
