It's not that much of a mystery. He's revealed a bit of info before on the public forum so this isn't "doxxing" him.
He's a US Southerner from Mississippi, though the sun has been known to hit his eye "like a big pizza pie" as well.
If you get the picture...
Some Louisianan French moved over to Mississippi generations ago. I am thinking NFL QB Brett Favre for instance. Perhaps the O.P. himself is descended from French that settled in that region and is always interested in finding out more about his ancestral culture . I'm just guessing.
Lol. Had this guy been interviewing people on the streets of Boston, he would not have been out of place. Are you really sure this is a Canadian thing? We say "sorry" all the time. I still remember a decade ago I was on a late night bus and the last passenger to get on was fumbling hard for her transit pass and so holding the bus from moving. Just as people do so many times, she blurted out "Sorry!" upon which the driver replied "Hey, don't look at me! I'm getting paid!" Then pointing to the rest of us,"These people want to go home!" As for politeness, if being soft spoken, looking too much on your cellphone and ignoring people is this guy's definition of being cold and impolite, he ought to come to our region more often. He'd think twice about Americans being friendlier or more polite.

It's quite unlikely that a Canadian bus driver would have added that last part, which is very typical American (especially NE Megalopolis) sarcasm.
