Brian Mulroney Dead at 84

There will be a State Funeral for Brian Mulroney on March 23, 2024. Mulroney will lie in state in Ottawa and lie in repose in Montreal prior to the funeral. The Prime Minister's Office said more details will be provided "in due course."

Parliamentarians are expected to pay tribute to Mulroney in the House of Commons when MPs return to Ottawa on March 18 after a two-week break.

State funerals are special public events reserved for eminent Canadians, including former prime ministers.

Lying in repose is a term used for when the casket of a former prime minister or Governor General lies anywhere other than on the Hill.

I’m happy the response has been mostly positive things about him. As someone who disagreed with him politically, it’s important to focus on the good things he did in his time as PM. Partisanship should end with people’s involvement in politics, and especially in the grave. In many ways Mulroney helped shape the Canada the world knows us for today
