Hey guys, I'm thinking about moving to Ponoka, Alberta for the upcoming summer. I'll be 22 and just out of college, and moving over from Ireland. I have family in the town so can stay with them. I've been twice before and absolutely love Canada, but last time i was over i was 16 and with my parents, so this would be a different experience. I was just wondering would u guys recommend it or not?
Are there any jobs to be had? Whats the nightlife like in the small towns, and in places such as Red Deer and Edmonton? Would an irish accent make a difference with the ladies? (Thought i may as well ask!)
Basically I'm just looking for some upsight as to if there are many people of the same age as me, or could I get bored spending the summer alone? I'd be looking to meet and make friends with some locals if possible!
I'm not familiar with Ponoka, but I think I'd go crazy if I was stuck in somewhere like Red Deer and even more so the smaller towns. You're in farming country out there - it's not known for its nightlife at all. Nightlife in a small town might be one pub - not trendy places, but places where the local men go to have a beer or two. I'd imagine that the local youth would be out having house parties or would go out camping on nearby lakes, etc.
Edmonton is not a small town but a small city - much more vibrant nightlife options in terms of clubs, pubs, and festivals. If you can get out to Banff in the Rockies, it's a much more international resort town with limited but vibrant nightlife - lots of people from Alberta go to Banff to party.

Thanks for the help.
Ponoka is a half decent place. You'll have a few pubs and clubs in the town but for weekends it is an easy drive to Red Deer and 1/5 hours to either Calgary or Edmonton. Understand that Alberta has the youngest population in Canada as well... You will be very close to Sylvan Lake as well and in the summer Sylvan Lake is probably Alberta's #1 tourist town. Tons of parties every night, especially in the summer.
As for jobs, you shouldn't have a problem as long as you have a vehicle (or ride) and are fairly flexible...
