My son cars was hit by another driver. My sons car was unoccupied in a legal spot. A police report has been filed and a claim was entered into the other drivers insurance to cover the damage. The estimate came in at over $5600 for damages, but the insurance company for the other side only wants to pay $1800. The adjuster for the insurance company deemed the car undrivable. Is this kind of absurdity normal and to be expected? How do I get this so that my son can get his car fixed? I would appreciate some advice, thank you.

What is the value of the car?
If the car is totaled and the car is only worth $1800... this would make sense.

Easiest way is to get your insurance carrier involved - if they determine the $5600 figure to be suitable, then let them deal w/the other firm. It's what you're (or him) paying for.
If the car is indeed inoperable, I would just make it easy on yourself and go through your own insurance company. They'll go through subrogation and assign fault (to the other party), but it might take a month or two to get your deductible back. If your car was drivable, you could shop around getting 3 estimates to show that other insurance company that they're low-balling you.
Don't agree to their payment, and go through your own insuraunce. Your insurance will do it's own inspection and estimate the costs, and seek restitution from the other company for you. If the other company does not comply, your insurance will pay for the repair, minus your deductable which you will pay, and pursue restitution from their company.
Since you are not at fault, you will not be charged for this accident by your insurance either. So do not worry about going to them for help! It is what you are paying them for!
(My last "two" accidents were when my car was legally parked... getting lots of experience here!)
You have to wonder why people make posts like the OP and don't include even the slightest bit of useful info.
beats me...... Any time someone mentions their car always state year make and model other wise there is no telling.. if this car is a 200 dollar beater take the money and run, but my guess is it isn't that much of a beater.
5 grand in damage these days is nothing..... A crushed bumper and a scratch in the pain will make that easy...

Dear NHDave,
Please forgive my inexperience with providing all the details. I typically do not post in this section. My sincere apologies. Please forgive me. The Ford 2001 mustang GT with low milage and in good condition was hit. Sorry, but I do not know the full market value, so I can not provide that for you NHDave. If I had to guess what the value is, I would say $4-5,000, but I have no expertise in this area. I certainly would be more than happy to provide you with the 3 page print out of the estimate, just shoot me you email............although you made a valid point, I do not feel your snippy response was necessary
Thank you to all the other people who responded. Your opinions were heplful to someone who lacks the experience with this issue.
Geez, I sure do hope I dont go to hell for not being able to make dear NHdave happy today!

Grow up. And there's a sticky right at the top of the automotive section entitled "Before you ask a repair question PLEASE read!!"
