I have been feeding my cat Nature's Variety frozen raw food for several months now. When I was at the pet store recently, I asked her if this was still the best stuff out there. She said that they have started to pasteurize it slightly to try and keep the FDA off of their backs {this defeats the purpose of it being raw}. She also said that they rabbits come from China, so the meat source is questionable.
Just wanted to share that with you in case you also feed your cat the same food. I have decided to switch to Primal.
I would e-mail Nature's Variety before believing what that person said. There are people at stores that claim to know a lot about a food, but listen to customers that spread rumors and then continue the chain. I don't use any NV products now, but I would hope that you would send an e-mail directly to them instead of spreading information that may clearly be incorrect.
I trust this pet store owner implicitly. But another pet store owner told me the exact same thing.
Because they probably heard it from that store owner. If you can paste the text of the e-mail that you send to NV, that would be more credible. Because as far as I see this, it is slander at this point. All their meat has always been from Canada...their rabbit formula has always had more pork in it than Rabbit to keep the cost down for pet owners. But, what you are suggesting has not been confirmed by NV - they can't lie about it if it is in fact true.
You don't have to believe it or me. I am not trying to slander a company, but I am also not cynical enough to doubt that this pet store owner has fully investigated this before she shared it with me. Feel free to investigate if you would like to.
Nature's Variety DOES gets their lamb from New Zealand and rabbit from China. You can email them yourself to back up that info.
Found this right on their website:
Do you source from China?
We are currently sourcing rabbit meat for our raw diets (including our exclusive freeze dried rabbit Bio-Coating™) and for our canned diets from a supplier in China. In order to ensure the quality of these suppliers, members of our management team have personally visited and audited the facilities. Nature's Variety also has a PhD food scientist on staff in China, who visits the facility and monitors meat quality. In addition, samples from shipments received from this supplier are submitted to an independent lab for testing. All results of testing and auditing have matched our specifications for quality and nutrition.

I would not eat for feed any of my pets food that I knew came from China. They poisoned their own babies with the same Melamine (sp?) they sold to put in pet foods. There's no accountability there. Lax laws and profit rules. Can you trust anything edible from there? I think not.

What exactly do they mean by "quality?" And there's no mention what these rabbits were fed or if toxins/antibiotics/pesticides were found in the meat. I don't buy it. China has an abysmal reputation for the care of their food animals. I'll continue to buy raw meat for my cats where I buy it for myself - the local super markets.
I e-mailed them and asked about the organic chicken...I'll let you guys know what they say once they respond (though I do have quite a few errands to run today, so I probably won't get back here until evening!) DANG, I was so excited to find this food close by, but if that chicken is from China, no way I'm going to buy it...EEGADS!
