I wish my 3 FIV guys liked the taste of the pump stuff! They don't! I just had to put it on their lips.
Rowdy didn't like it at first, but then suddenly took to it. Now he doesn't let me forget to give it to him. Is the label on the pump you got "ensyl-f"? That's what mine reads at the top.

<<Once you get everyone on l-lysine, after a few weeks, things will seem much brighter. xxx>>
Thanks, catsmom,
My feral cat colony colleague is great with animals and I told her my story: She said just go to the vet office and get that paste and I did and have given it to some of the animals (taking a break and will resume, some hate it others love it).
She said what you did: She also said to start it out right away on all of them now, keep it up for a while. I think for the FIV + guys, it wouldn't do any harm to give it to them for life, right? They are all in amazing health: 2 males are age 13 and one is 6.
What do you think?
I think it is fine to keep the FIV+ cats on a maintenance dose after the flare ups have all subsided, but of course check with their vet on that. Cats with the herpes virus should be on it all the time, too. You can try to find the lowest dose possible. I used 500 mg every other day as a maintenance dose, but some prefer to do 250 mg daily.

I'm betting none of the cats will mind the powder. It tastes like salt, nothing else. And cats love salt.

Lysine is not really that hard to find. I've run across the tablets in both Walmart and at the Vitamin Shoppe. I'm pretty sure you can get 250mg or 500mg variety.
Most people sprinkle it on food. I've never really used it myself but some people I know use it just as an immune booster for even their healthy cats on a weekly basis. Some use it in herpes cats when they have a flair up.
As far as dosage, I'm going to recommend you speak with your vet about that, especially seeing that you are talking about a kitten. Anytime you are going to supplement in a vitamin or give meds I think it's best to get that info from your veterinarian to avoid any possible complications. They may also recommend a dose when the pet has an outbreak and a dose for maintenance.
I am using the dose on the directions and thank you!

I discovered it last year when I desperately started a thread, not knowing what was going on w/ my poor cats. It was recommended by forum posters, and my Vet also recommended it, although I was prepared to ask about armed w/ the info from forum.
Vet prescribed it and I purchase it there and keep a supply on hand. I use the powder and put it as directed on top of canned food.
Works really well for the symptoms...As I understand it nothing cures the virus...you can only control that horrible asthma like cough. My cats caught it when one used to be an outside cat.....cats catch it from other cats in your neighborhood.
Just as an example from my container....IMO Your personal Vet is the best source of knowledge.
The brand I use for my cats...again check w/ your Vet..... is Viralys...supplemental L-lysine HCI. You might find it on a pet med site online. Or at your Vet's. On mine the container dose for cats over 6 mths....recommended is one rounded scoop (provided) 2x daily. One rounded scoop is equivalent of 500mg. For kittens under 6 mths 1/2 scoop 2x daily. Adjust amount as recommended by your Vet.

I've been giving 500 mg/day to 3 of our cats (we have 10, all altered male rescues) for about a month; one of our cats - a rescue from Beirut, via Best Friends - had been sneezing regularly (no infection, just clear). The last few days, he's been very stuffy, as though the mucus is still there but has dried within his nostrils. I removed it, and stopped the lysine today for all of them. Has anyone else experienced that? I bought 500 mg capsules at the vitamin shop, and mixed a half capsule with their wet food AM and PM. Would decreasing the dosage work?
My kitten has herpes I'm just tired of bringing her to the veterinary. Ive brought her 3 times and they give me antibiotics, etc... But nothing works for her. She looks really bad and also she is starting to sneeze, she throws up a lot. So I later desided to bring her to a specialist (eye veterinary). He had told me about herpes and gave me genteal ointment because the eyes are too dry. I'm so sad about my cat, I have now payed a lot of money on this cat. I've found some stuff on the Internet like lysine chews, but they weren't perceived by the doctor and I haven't been using them long to see a change....

I recommend you use pure L-lysine powder. The NOW brand or the Source Naturals brand are both good brands. I've always used the Source Naturals brand. Give your kitten 1/4 teaspoon a day, half of that in a morning meal and half in an evening meal.
Feed a wet grain free diet, especially avoiding corn, but you want to really avoid grains with a herpes kitty.
Antibiotics only treat the secondary bacterial infections, they do not help with the virus. L-lysine inhibits the virus from replicating and boosts the immune system.
For really stubborn cases, lactoferrin has been used, but I would give the l-lysine a try by itself first. Don't bother with the chews or treats. They have other stuff in them your kitten doesn't need and you have to feed too many to get a therapeutic dose. The pure powder only tastes a little salty and dissolves well in wet food.
I am not a vet but lived with a herpes kitty for many years.
PS has your kitten been test for FeLV/FIV?
