Nimbus was camoflauged on a rug in front of the sink in my kitchen, and I was cleaning up a mess on my counter, and went striding up to the sink, sponge in hand to rinse it off, looking at the sponge and not the cat. And I so tripped over him. He didn't cry out, but jumped up and ran to the other side of the room, casting a look over his shoulder, like "Hey! What the heck is YOUR problem??"
And of course I wanted to snuggle and hug him and make him know Mommy loves him and is SO SORRY... And of course he wanted nothing to do with me. I was like yup...I'll just go kill myself now.
Seriously it's like the worst thing ever, I felt like so wretched. What a guilt trip.
He did eventually forgive me.
I know from experience, this one...it's just as bad stepping on a dog as it is a cat. It's just that cats make more of a habit of obstructing foot traffic...
My cat shows up on the carpet (she's Siamese) but of course she still gets stood on because she purposely gets in the way. When she's being very naughty she will attempt to run between your legs as you're walking like she's weaving through a minefield.
The resultant yowl of fake agony and display of high dudgeon when the inevitable occurs seems to have rewards in itself. I usually am totally unmoved and say "well, you will get in the way, what do you expect".
I step on my cats all the time; they are so obnoxious around feeding time! They have yet to learn that swirling around my ankles is a sure way to get stepped on, and it won't make the food appear in the bowl any faster.

It's almost unavoidable, and will happen eventually. Especially if you have a 'foot stalker' like I do. The times we've had our 'accidents' there weren't any injuries fortunately.

Same here. I'm so afraid I'll either hurt one of them or take another fall that necessitates a trip to the ER. No I didn't trip over a cat,... but a rock in the flower border I didn't know was there. Ankle was in a cast for 8 weeks.
I just bought a bunch of throw rugs in light colors to replace the dark brown ones as I don't see Phaedra belly-up on them at night, even with the nightlights in most rooms. Phaedra is all dark brown, almost the same color as the old throw rugs.
Why do cats think they have to race up and down the stairs under your feet???????
One broken arm, one ankle and one wrist.
There's something to be said about single floor living!!!!
