I agree with that which others have written ~ plus I'll suggest that your cat is asking for petting and scratching under his chin and behind his ears or whatever you regularly do to show your affection.
Cats often have a bad reputation for being aloof, but my felines have never lived down to that behaviour!
When my cats head butt me, it means they want me to rub their faces.
I like it when they do that.
Except that time one of them butted me when I was drinking a cup of coffee, and broke my tooth.
It cost about $1,000.00 to repair and crown the tooth.
The head butt was free.
One of mine demands 5 minutes of petteds right after I see her when I get home. If I don't let her head butt and rub then she gives me a chomp on the leg or a hook when I try to walk away.
Our male cat does this constantly. He also does it when you are trying to place his food in the dish, which sometimes results in it spilling onto the table.
Several times a day he'll come up and butt his head against me, usually my leg.
As already said, he's telling you he loves you, and that he's ready for you to show you love him too. Some cats do it more than others, like my girl Sheba. When she's in an affectionate mood, she headbutts everything... walls, doors, furniture, me, etc. It's a wonder she hasn't knocked herself out a few times. She's always been a little stand-offish, so when she does that I know she's wanting some lovins, and I oblige. Headbutting is just another example of cats communicating with body language.
