I volunteer for a smallish cat rescue center, and we would like to do more in terms of getting the word out there concerning our organization, fundraising events, donation/volunteer needs, etc. Unless there are hardship cases that capture the attention of local news media, our efforts thus far have not produced much traction. Can someone suggest clever ideas or good resources for us? Thanks!
I'm in Chapel Hill. I think you should ask mods to transfer this to Raleigh,Durham Chapel Hill forum. Somebody there might have some good ideas. There are several cat rescues in the area and I know some have paid PR people on staff or hire PR firm for specific story. Good luck.

Advertising would help. Perhaps the churches and stores will allow you post put up small attractive posters.
Without some kind of advertising people can't know what's going on. Some local newspapers and radio stations will give free airtime/space to non-profit orgs.
If you want to raise funds, church bake or craft sales and rummage sales often work.

Facebook has proven itself to be a great tool for the rescues I work with but social media is a slow go, it takes a lot of work to build up and you have to have to be able to stay on top of it. As a person who works in media myself, I can say it's also good to get and stay in touch with your local (and even national) media; not spamming them, but establishing relationships with reporters. Some of them may be passionate about your cause and take it up. Maybe the local Patch site might also help out?
I know one local rescue in my area recently did a successful yard sale that seemed to help.
Also make sure you are optimizing your Google presence so your rescue is coming up at the top of Google results for your area when people are looking for "rescue" in your area. If you need some tips for doing this, feel free to PM me and I can give you some pointers.
