I really feel for you. My cat did this out of town and there was like a forest next door and coyotes and God only knows what. But she came back. Covered in brambles and other stuff, but she came back. Looked like she did a lot of hiding and traveling through hidden places ........

Another time she had fallen through a grate at an apartment complex where that led to someone's 'patio'. Only walking and walking and calling finally I heard a meow and there she was!

I hate to say this but kitty might be trapped and needs to hear your voice to meow to you.

He didn't drown. He would have had no reason to go out on the water; cats are way too smart for that.

Just remember, cats are extremely intelligent, cautious creatures. They are very good at recognizing and avoiding potential danger. He's probably fine.

There's a pretty high likelihood that he is close to your house, just holed up trying to keep warm. They're very good at finding spaces like that. Even if he had been chased by a dog, he probably didn't go far, because cats don't sprint a half mile in a straight line when they're scared. They just race to the nearest hole or up the nearest tree. I would really suggest going back to each neighbor, and ask them if you can go in their yard. Identify any place that looks as though it could possibly contain a cat, and go over to it calling his name.

Two questions - does your cat like tuna, and do you use a manual can opener? If the answer to those questions is "yes," then take your can opener with you and just keep clicking it. I know it sounds silly, but as scared as he probably is, he's also pretty hungry by now. Even if he is too scared to respond to your voice, if he hears that click and thinks "OMG!!! Tuna!!!" that could be enough to make him speak up.

I know that right now, you're probably even more scared than he is, but try to focus on the positives (to whatever degree you are able.) He's probably fine, and probably very close to home - in fact, probably not more than a hundred yards from where you are right now. He wants very, very badly to come home, but just needs a little help from you. He's in a situation he doesn't understand, and he doesn't know what to do - so he needs you to help him out by doing some of his thinking for him. All he knows to do is hide and stay safe while the humans come up with a solution and save him from all this bewildering strangeness.

That's pretty much the way he's thinking right now. You know your cat, and you know how he thinks and reacts. If you look at it in those terms, it might help you get inside his head, and come up with some ideas on how to help him.

Yes--we found our cat 7 blocks away from home. Your cat may be hiding in the woods but is too scared to come out right now. Keep trying, calling his name. I read that many cats have a "threshold point" of between 10-14 days before they will come out. Don't lose hope!

Is there a site like Next Door you could post on so your neighbors could keep an eye out for him. Have you checked with animal control? Unlikely that he would have gotten picked up, but you never know. I'd also check Craigslist for your area some people will post lost and found animals there. Is there a vet near you? If so, some people will take lost animals to the closest vet's office.

Good luck.

Do all of those things! I checked or called the local shelters daily, and dropped off flyers at the nearest vet offices in case he was brought in. Check Facebook to see if there's a missing animal group for your area.

Keeping paws crossed for you!

Just wanted to put this here:

Family's cat bolts after car crash, reappears weeks later in stranger's barn | KOMO

Obviously a different scenario, but a good story about a cat that was found.

Can you borrow a live trap and put some stinky food in there? A neighbor told me she caught a missing cat that way.
