When I had cats no absolutely not. I liked to watch them sleep until they woke usually soon after I was watching them. I worked all day and looked forward to seeing them. At night they would curl up by me one on my lap the other on the side of my leg. My girl would get so angry with her brother because she didn't want him near me when it was her turn for gentle rubs and sweet kisses.
I can't tell if she's sleeping or not....but yes, I pet her whenever I darn well please, including while she is eating. I wanted to train her to be tolerant of being touched in case there are ever children/strangers around.
Seems to have worked...she doesn't mind being petted anytime. Unlike my last cat who was a biter when approached in the wrong mood or the wrong hand position.
I do. Mine don't mind. They might pop a head up but then put it right back down again. Plus, if I'm petting them and they fall asleep on my lap, I don't necessarily stop petting them. I guess it depends on the kitty!
Or.. can you not stand to wake them up from their peaceful sleep?
Sure.
It's not like they're wiped out after an exhausting day and need their shut-eye. I mean, sure, they keep busy. There are paper balls to be chased, toes to be attacked, random objects to be knocked to the floor, and the odd hairball to be horked up on the bedspread. But they seem to squeeze in a two-hour nap between all of those events, and then crash for most of the night.
So this... "Enough with the petting! I've only had 17 hours of sleep today!"
...sure sounds like the feline version of a first-world problem to me.
And if the result is that they're too tuckered to knock the remote off the arm of the sofa while looking at my with a combination of amusement and contempt, well, I can live with that.
