Does anyone have an idea why this happens -
we get a cat food that the little devil loves, but it is in a big can, enough for two meals.
We give him half the can in the morning, and have to sit the rest, covered, on the kitchen counter until time for the next meal. He is then still crazy over it.
If we put the second portion in the fridge, no matter how it is wrapped and even if we bring it to room temperature first, he no longer likes the food.

I had another cat who would also do this. He always somehow knew the food was refrigerated and rejected the food.

I tried covering the food in different ways, thinking it picked up odors from the fridge. I tried redishing the food in a ceramic dish. Nothing changed.

How do they know when the food has been chilled and why do they not like it then?

My cat get 1/4 can of cat food per day. If it's not a new can, it goes into the refrigerator with can cover on it. The next morning he gets another can on his plate, but it's warmed up in the microwave for 12 seconds. He has no objections, and he'll eat it cold if I give it to him that way. It's probably just your cat's preference.

Talking Water goes a long way!

I always am refrigerating cans of food. The way I warm the food up is putting the remaining food, or the portion that you want to give to your cat, in a baggie. You then submerge the baggie in hot water until the food gets really yummy warm. My cats can't resist this. As for microwaving, I have learned that the process of microwaving actually destroys nutrients in the food itself, so you may want to think twice about not only microwaving your cat's food, but yours as well. Hope this helps.

I don't think enough nutrients are being destroyed to hurt my cat or myself. I've been warming my food up in a microwave for years, and haven't been hurt by it. I don't have time to transfer 1/4 can of cat food into a baggie, then warm it up under hot water. He eats it just fine out of the microwave, and whines for it the entire time from when the can comes out of the refrigerator to the time I put him plate on the floor.

And at 15lbs, he's not lacking for food...(he just thinks he is!)

My kitties won't eat microwaved cat food if it's been opened and refridgerated previously... I think they're just picky.

- think of it this way, if I put my foot down about not being force-fed re-heated mac & cheese, I have to tolerate them putting their paw down as well, I don't hold it against them, I just shop for smaller cans that they split and use an entire one up for dinner time

Both this cat and my last knew if the darned thing were refrigerated.
I know it's picky, but

How the heck do they know?

As I said, even if I decant it and/or reheat it, they know.
Yes, I usually get the smaller cans, but he likes the Friskies Select. He normally does not like Friskies, but loves the Select.

I have never seen this topic addressed anywhere - how do they know?

My cats won't eat canned once it's been in the fridge. Nor will they when it's been re-heated. I think maybe it has to do with a change once it's been refrigerated. Maybe it tastes like chemicals to them and not fresh out of the can.

Obviously,it smells better warm because I've read to heat a cats food in the microwave if it's nose is stopped up so they can smell it better and it will be more desirable. Cats are very keen on scent and if it doesn't smell right, they want eat it.
