I switched to a plate and a larger water bowl for the sake of the possum that comes - he makes a mess out of regular bowls.

The "why" for me is because the birds, opossums, etc, all have a great, natural buffet available to them, however, my feral cats do not have this luxury. My issues are at night, so no birds, but have opossums, raccoons, and the bufo toads. The toads are the number one thing I try to get rid of, raccoons next, I not really bother with opossums unless they are adults, because they will eat all the food, and eat all the refill, and just sit there and eat, eat, and eat. Raccoons cause too many issues, and the cats are scared of them.
Water though, that is for everyone, I leave several bowls out around my property.
Frogs do actually eat the cat food and will also use it as a place to lay eggs. Frogs do not like the smell of lemon juice and you can spray around the area to keep them away. Do not use vinegar because that can burn the frogs.
When it comes to keeping birds away, there are two ways that have been helpful for me. One, place a sheet of aluminum foil (shiny side up) under the food. Second, place a fake snake (one that looks real) near the food. I have far less birds frequenting the area.

yes, I agree, they do eat the dry cat food.
As far as lemon juice vs vinegar goes...both are acidic .
I would think both would irritate their skins.
( don't think it's the smell of the lemon juice) but the irritation of the skin from both lemon juice and/or vinegar that would keep them away, just my 2 centavos.
I like frogs and cats, trying to keep a happy medium here, lol.
Most of the cats I've known killed birds--or at least stalked them--if given the chance, ditto frogs. Weird the cats would let them take over something as valuable as their food.

That is me. I put food out for the cats in the area, but there are a few possums and skunks and birds that come by and eat too.Right now there is a Mamma raccoon and her three babies that come by.
My indoor kitties don't seem to mind the possums, they growl and hiss through the patio door window at the raccoons, and in the day they go absolutely nuts when the birds eat the cat food! It keeps them entertained. A few years back we had a groundhog come by for a bite every day, but I have never had any frogs.
What you don't want is the raccoon bringing all of it's relatives by. You can't fill them up and they start making messes. I remember when I thought they were cute. Eventually it's like swarm of furry maggots.

Yes, DO NOT ENCOURAGE/FEED THE RACCOONS. They can and will kill the cats, they are pests and don't let them get started. If I couldn't supervise the food when I put it out, I'd bring it back in.
No food=no pests.
