Okay, I know there are some celebrities that are obviously A-list, like Tom Cruise.
But I get confused with borderline A/B list celebrities. Also, I guess there are C-List celebrities (like everyone on reality TV), but is there really a D-list?

As far as A/B confusion goes, is Britney Spears really A-list? If so, is her stardom really somehow comparable with that of Meryl Streep's? How about Miley Cyrus?

Does it make you A-list to appear on the cover of every Life & Style magazine (a la Kim Kardashian) or does that automatically relegate one to the B-list? It's all so confusing.

This is an interesting article (I thought) on the subject. It's from associatedcontent.com.

The whole A, B, C, Z, whatever is weird, I think. Really, I doubt Jessica Simpson or Britney Spears care what their ratings are. They're still raking in the dough.

Great article peppermint! I think that in Hollywood, the A-listers are the ones that get invited to ALL the parties and when they go into a restaurant, and another celebrity is waiting for a table before them, they go ahead and give the table to the A-lister, instead of the other celebrity. A-listers get the best roles, the most money offered, have more choices in general, and get the most media coverage. It's like that song where Pink complains that they gave her table to Jessica Simpson and she had to go sit with David Spade, lol. It must have been when Jess was still an A-lister....

Good article...I think its a rough ever changing guide to who is popular (and Bankable) for good reasons. Meryl Streep/Clint Eastwood are examples. I think Britney had a moment as an A lister or maybe high-B, because basically she was hot lipsynching jailbait, where she was invited to everything. But she is sliding down the ranks at C-D now. Her ex Mr. Federline was a D lister who moved to C when he got married.

Wow, that was a fascinating article peppermint; thank you! Who would have thought Britney was C-list?? But more importantly, it totally answered my question, which is rare.

To the commenter who said, "who cares" you're right, there's no reason in the world I should care so much, but I do. I guess it's a guilty pleasure...

I wonder if someone actually is in charge of the list and hands out copies before a party is thrown.

Cathy Griffin wrote an autobiography "My Life On The D-List". I haven't read it, but apparently The List is a big deal.

I guess it can be compared to the social lists many people have in high school, college, work place, etc. Some people are more popular than others for any number of reasons.

I would think there are people in entertainment who aren't well-known, but are kind of okay with that. Like maybe voice actors or some character actors. June Foray is still alive and I imagine most of us have heard as "Talky Tina" and "Natasha" from Rocky & Bullwinkle, but I'd imagine she's okay that most of us wouldn't recognize her if we saw her. Or for characters Fyvush Finkel, mostly just because I wanted to write Fyvush Finkel.
