Truly, you haven't lived until you've sat at the bedside of a beloved friend who is dying and knows it ... and hasn't had their 35th birthday yet. If you don't have to watch someone you adore waste away then go to their funerals and try to tell their grieving parents what a great child they raised, I think you should thank whatever higher power you believe in for protecting you from one of life's more hideous moments.
We look at people who die of AIDS/HIV differently than other people who die young.

Now, in saying that, I mean my generation.. The current 40-50 year olds.

We were in school and of an age to understand what was happening during the whole Ryan White thing, and went through the period when rumors and half-truths were all that we had. news would report that it was spread by kissing.. Sharing a toothbrush, etc.

My age (41).. We're kinda the turning point.. Because right about the time we started really understanding what it was all about, the true facts started coming out. That it was fairly difficult to catch.

But, still.. I tend to, and I think people around my age still think of it as something that someone has done to themselves. Yes, there are people who got it transferred from the mother, there's likely still some of the older hemophiliacs out there living with it (One of the Ray brothers is still alive, I believe).. A person or twelve who got it from a dentist (yes, kids, dentists used to stick their nasty hands right in your mouth with no gloves) But, in general, we still look at it as you did something wrong (so far as your choices) to catch it.

Younger folks.. I think never developed that attitude. and.. The younger folks I think are more reckless, because they never grew up with it being a death sentence. A horrible death sentence. So, they're more apt to make a poor choice and catch it as well.

But.. I certainly do look at someone who is 35 dying of AIDS differently than someone who is 35 dying of a brain tumor. Not defending that I do look at it differently, but.. I do.

Charlie Sheen HIV Postive — Actor Has Virus That Causes AIDS | Radar Online

Quote:
The ENQUIRER learned during its investigation that at least four women have claimed Sheen, 50, exposed them to the virus, and he reportedly paid of one female sex partner in a hush-hush financial settlement. There are also several active lawsuits against Sheen over the status of his deadly condition.

“Charlie had sex with multiple partner since learning his HIV status without informing them of his potentially deadly HIV infection,” one source told The ENQUIRER.
Yup he's scum.

And sorry, those days of mocking the Enquirer are long gone, as they have been quite reliable in these sort of things lately.

But like I said, there will be some who will minimize and ignore all of these things and engage in a bit of revisionism just because he's a celeb. These ignoramuses will be all glowing with sympathy and praise at Charlie's 'courage' for being 'brave' in admitting the diagnosis.

Um Sheen is your age. He isn't a millennial. He was starring in the Major League and Hot Shots movies between the times when I was still in diapers and into first grade.

I for one do enact safe sex. I have only had two sexual partners, one of which I have gone all the way with and despite being in a committed relationship, I wore a condom (though not for STI's.) I can't say for the rest of my generation BUT, other STIs do see rises and falls, just like different drugs getting circulated every few years.

My uncle is HIV+

It was a lot of drama in the family when that news came out, let me tell ya.

Why would it be a conspiracy? What would the goal be?

I was going to say the same thing. He had to either sleep with a man or used a dirty needle. Its hard to catch the virus from women

It can still happen with male-to-female, especially through anal sex.

Today, you can live a normal and healthy life if you are infected with HIV, you just have to take your anti-viral medication every day for the rest of your life, which can cost up to $40,000 a year or more. That's why Magic has done so well.

So far there has been only one confirmed person who has been "cured" from having HIV and he is known as the "German patient", who is actually an American from San Francisco who was living in German at the time. He developed cancer while having HIV and got a peripheral blood stem cell/bone marrow transplant to try and defeat his blood cancer and in the process (which almost killed him) his peripheral blood stem cell/bone marrow donor had the Delta 32 mutation, which 4–16% of people of European descent have at least one copy of it in their genes.

People with the CCR5-Δ32 mutation have an immunity against certain strains (types) of HIV, yes there are multiple strains of HIV, where the virus can not bind to their T-cells and infect them.
