I watched Now Voyager last night , an oldie with Bette Davis.. and wow was her wardrobe fab... she wore two evening outfits that would fit in today.. full of class and fantasy. one a long sleeved coat dress with sequins, just beautiful.. the other looked white chiffon with a pleated top and long evening coat embellished with sparkly butterflies.. fantasy and beautiful..... Grace Kelly and Doris Day also had class.. but I didnt expect this of Bettes wardrobe.. https://alisonkerr.wordpress.com/201...m-now-voyager/

They had fantastic designers at the movie studios in those days Dizzy. Adrian at MGM, who dressed Joan Crawford in all those padded shoulder outfits. Orry-Kelly at Bette's studio Warner Brothers....... Edith Head at Paramount. They made just beautiful clothes for the stars to wear.
Cary Grant loved the clothes designed for him so much, it was in his contract he kept them after filming completed.
I saw some costumes from movies of the 30s and 40s in New York City many years ago. Things like some outfits worn by Vivian Leigh in Gone With The Wind. Also some of Bette Davis's costumes. What struck me was how petite those women were. The costumes looked like they wouldn't have fitted a modern slim 14 year old girl.
Brilliant info Dave.. thanks so much.. I didnt know that about the lovely Cary Grant but knew he was very fussy about his clothes... Yes the designers for the studio were fantastic.. I was looking at Grace Kellys outfits in Rear Window and High Society.... I know she had it all and looked great in anything but some of those creations were wonderful ... the green suit and black and white dress in Rear Window.. and all her outfits even the trousers in High Society were excellent.. I loved the organza dress she wore to get married in the movie.. I wonder if some of the stars picked their own outfits or were made to wear them..lucky you seeing those clothes for real... I saw Lucille Balls outfits and she must have been slim and tall.. http://www.bragvintage.co.uk/blog/mo...rs-helen-rose/
