I know, Pippy. That just seemed a little hypocritical on her part. (I remember when they first married and she appeared to adore him. It's disheartening to hear someone--her, not you--discussing the faults of a person who's no longer alive to defend himself.)

How awful and it's a shame he was able to get away with it.

Adding a couple of things I've heard before:

Grant was also very taken with Sophia Loren that the director of 'Houseboat', in which both Grant and Loren starred, complained about how difficult it was to direct the two in the movie. Loren wrote about her 'unconsummated affair' with Grant in her memoir.

Before agreeing to star in the movie 'Charade' with Audrey Hepburn, he insisted that the plot be changed so that it was Audrey's character who pursued his character to avoid stereotypical older man pursuing younger woman storyline.

well according to Dyan he almost forced her to do LSD on numerous occasions. I don't blame her one little bit for revealing that. He was a good actor but a very troubled person.

I just watched last night a great 90 minute documentary (by PBS) on Cary Grant included on the 2nd DVD,
of the 50th Anniversary version of "North By Northwest".
The docmentary is almost as good the Hitchcock classic.

Hitch and Grant were good friends, Cary made four great movies with Hitchcock,
starting with Suspicion in 1941.

The documentary touched on Cary Grant living with Randolph Scott between marriages,
lots of rumours but Grant always insisted they were just good friends.

I'm a big fan and have a lot of his movies, he had great chemistry with Kate Hepburn,
Bringing Up Baby is a classic.

Also impressed with his long a varied career but also knew when to call it a day and
quit making movies at 62, his last movie being "Walk Don't Run" in 1966.

The documentary was a bit off on when he started taking LSD, making look like
it was after North By Northwest, around 1960.When actually it was while he was filming
Houseboat in 1957-58. It was a difficult film due to on again, off again romance with his
costar Sophia Loren. He was really smitten by her.

Cary Grant was one of the best. From Hollywood's golden era.
Today's movie stars just aren't in the same league, well...maybe Clooney....he's like an old time star.

Clooney doesnt have his charisma, not many do...well to me anyway.. His favourite female to work with was Grace Kelly, why I dont know as she couldnt act.. lovely woman though and they seemed to share a sense of humour which is lovely... Sophia I always thought was a fake romance.. never liked the woman and still dont, not in any way. never saw her pretty.. and very conceited woman too.. just didnt ever see them as a couple.. could be wrong .... same with Cannon, couldnt understand his choice here at all... and so different from his first wives, but then they all seemed quite different.. His last wife seemed classy. Cary visited his old city Bristol on occassions.. there are photos online of him with Dyan Cannon and his baby in the town... It seemed he didnt like to be approached when he went to visit his mothers house but would gladly go over and chat with someone doing their garden.. https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2061/2...e4ca7884_b.jpg

Cary as a boy.. http://p5.storage.canalblog.com/58/5...3/91927755.jpg

He did not discover the truth about his mother until 1935 when his father died and he became his mother's next of kin. Grant traveled back to England and was re-united with Elsie. It must have been an incredibly emotional time for both of them. Poor Elsie was a confused lady and for the rest of her days found it very difficult to work out the difference between Archie Leach, the son she thought she had lost, and Cary Grant the debonair and famous Hollywood actor.

Grant had her released from the asylum and looked after her well. The doctors recommended she stay in England and indeed Elsie steadfastly refused to travel to America despite many subsequent invitations from Cary. He set her up in her own household in Bristol and visited her regularly. Elsie was as resilient as her son and she lived to the good age of 93, dying in 1973.
