A great actress and singer but also by all accounts a great lady as well.
Many only remember Miss McDaniel from her Oscar winning role as "Mammy" in Gone With The Wind, but the lady had a varied and long career, especially for an African American in those times.
And of course that famous scene from GWTW that sealed Miss McDaniel's Oscar IMHO. When Mammy tells Scarlett "He's her husband ain't he?" while preventing her from ruining the reunion of Ashley and Melanie.
Having said that, I'll add that my favorite "Hattie" movie is "Since You Went Away."
Yes! Another great film and role for Miss McDaniel.
She played a domestic again, but you'd be hard pressed to call her character a "servant". *LOL*
Best line was when Miss. Colbert's character asks why HMcD was home so early from her "second job" (it was war time and she went to work for other families to make ends meet, but never left her main job), Miss McDaniel replied "new union rules I got for myself".
Song of the South was another great film featuring Hattie McDaniel. Sadly for those of us who never saw it in the big screen (or small for that matter), never will as Disney has refused all request to reissue the film nor even allow it onto DVD.

My father actually remembers seeing that movie when he was a kid (he's 77 years old). He took me to see it in the early 1980's when it was re-released. He tried for years to track down a copy of it on VHS or DVD.
