I think a celebrity is someone known to everyone from 9 to 90. Not a person that only a certain section of the population would know who they are.
I don't think this thread is consequential enough to get hung up on whether or not someone "qualifies" as a celebrity. So maybe you don't know someone who is mentioned in this thread, but someone else does. So what? The point of the thread is to recognize anyone with any level of renown and acknowledge their passing due to COVID.

There are a lot of Broadway stars that only theatergoers recognize their names. They are still "celebrities." I don't follow sports much so I won't recognize some major sports figures. So what? They are still known by sports fans. Do you follow ballet or opera? I would recognize their names if they passed from Covid, but a lot of 9 year olds would not and I would want to know if they passed away.
William “Bill” Pursell, a Grammy-nominated composer and studio musician who accompanied such artists as Patsy Cline and Bob Dylan, died Thursday in Nashville at the age of 94.
Pursell’s death came after a “very fast, tough battle with COVID pneumonia,” his daughter and recording artist, Laura Pursell, said in a statement.

Soumitra Chatterjee, the legendary Indian actor with more than 200 movies to his name who was famed for his work with Oscar-winning director Satyajit Ray, died Sunday of complications from the coronavirus. He was 85.
Chatterjee’s daughter, Poulami Bose, said her father died at a hospital in the city of Kolkata in West Bengal state, where he had been staying since testing positive for the virus in early October.
