He was an interviewer. And a pretty dang good one. And, I will agree with you that he didn't generally let politics figure into the discussion. If a political figure came on his show, he'd ask questions about political issues, but he wouldn't argue political points.
I agree. I would call him a "pop interviewer". And there's nothing wrong with that. I was not a regular viewer of his show, but when I did watch he seemed to have the ability to make personalities feel comfortable enough to open up. He was very good at what he did.
