Just got a text message on my phone stating that I owe a payment to Cash America Today.com. That is a legit website, although I've never had any previous contact with them. So should I disregard it as a scam? I.e., Not even bothering to call the company to make a correction? Has anybody else had that similar experience?

Just reply "Wrong Number."

I have a wireless phone number that previously belonged to some guy who apparently had a very complicated life, that led to him not telling peoplw in it when he got a new number. I have to do this a few times a month. Usually people are grateful when I do that.

Same here. I still get the occasional call after over ten years with the number. She apparently still uses it on credit applications.

Disregard completely other than blocking the number.

In my case it's different numbers. Electric companies, municipal service (water and sewer) providers, car insurance companies, retailers, etc.

That is the best advice.

Responding will confirm your phone # is active and will create more SPAM messages or calls.

+1 on Do NOT respond.

I have a contact in my phone named "spammers". I have it's ringtone set for 'none' (or you can find a tone that is silent).
I add suspected spammer incoming numbers to this contact. It has almost a 100 by now!
The only disruption I suffer is that sometime later I notice an Incoming Call Missed. Which is easy to clear. Some phones have a setting where you can tell it to ignore specific numbers. Same result.

(And if it's someone who really has business talking to me, but they don't show up on Caller ID, then they'll leave a voice mail and later it's easy to go back and add that incoming number to my contacts so it doesn't get blocked next time.)
