When will they give us a cell phone which is just a phone? I dont use 99% of the tech stuff on my phone and I dont want it. I need to be able to punch in numbers, text, read the time and date and store a few numbers nothing more. To change the time or date on this piece of hi-tech junk is a challenge in itself!

If you don't pick a cell phone that is just a phone, that is on you. Every carrier offers, plain of the mill cell phones without all the extra stuff, if you don't select them, then how can you complain?
Sure they do. I'm in Vancouver and plain jane phone features was all I wanted in my cel phone, that's what I got. I looked around a few places and found the best deal for what I wanted with Telus.
If you are under contract with any provider then check the internet for their site and review the phones. If you're not you can check samsung,LG,motorola,etc...They ALL carry basic models. You have to realize that alot of older people prefer basic phones so all manufacturers cater to different ages and people with different needs.
I had a "plain phone" for about 7 years. It was great. No problems, great signal (only one in my office that could actually receive calls inside the building). Oh wait, it did have a built-in camera on it. So, I guess it wasn't that plain!
New phone (one of the fancier ones): no service inside my building and the battery lasts about half as long. What a waste.
best phone i ever had was a small kyocera flip; it was silver with blue backlit keys. excellent signal strength, contacts list, and one ringtone.
i read an article a couple years back in a tech mag about why phone companies do not offer simple, reliable, durable phones in the US; the answer was something along the lines of, "we don't make enough money off them, and people in the US are willing to pay for whatever we give them". That paraphrased quote was from motorola. the author was asking them about a phone he used while in europe that was not available in america.
I used to have Virgin Mobile's Slice. The phone cost $20 and I had 200 anytime minutes for $7 a month, texting $5 month extra, no contract. Don't know if they still have the Slice but they do have a bit of an upgrade to that, the SuperSlice. Only problem for me is their website sucks infested elephant dung molasses.... slow slow slow....
The cool thing here is that VM travels on the Sprint network.

the prepaid flip phones are exactly what OP is looking for. I went back to my Virgin phone after my SideKick conked out. No internet, camera, etc. but it does exactly what its supposed to do
