I guess I'm biased because I originally come from a world where On The Border never would have been listed as a "decent" Mexican restaurant to begin with. When I want Mexican food I go all the way out to Ashley Phosphate since Los Reyes is the only place I have found so far that is decent. I will be trying the other places mentioned in this thread though. I agree with the other poster, what is the DEAL with that cheese wiz garbage everyone seems to use out here. Ugh!
This - I live in the Charlotte, NC area and there are On The Borders here - it's corporate Mexican. Give me a mom and pop Mexican place any day.
Maybe they want it gone because their food quality is inconsistent, the restaurant is always empty, and their customer service is sub-par. There are so many restaurant choices I wasn't hoping that On The Border would close, but I am certainly not crying in my coffee over the loss.
I am curious about who told you the landlord wanted them out because they wanted to put something more upscale in their place? I heard a very different story about the reason for this closing. I'm not sharing because I can't verify it, but it seems like there are lots of "theories" about the reason for the closing.
The hostess told us when we expressed our surprise at the closing.
I'm going to do the exact same thing, just as soon as I trade my husband in for one who knows the sharp end of a saw. He's been promising me some raised beds (we're talking 5' off the ground) but he and I both know that is outside of his skill set.
Good for you for finding your own solution to a grocery supply problem.
And, now I'm REALLY hungry!!!
I bet I could talk my other half into building this for you. He is a carpenter by trade, but got out of the business when we moved here. He still has a bunch of tools.
I attempted to copy and paste an email I received from their corporate office, but apparently I don't know how to do that. However, it confirmed what the hostess had told me - that the landlord did not want them to renew their lease... Time will tell as to whether something "upscale" takes its place...

I would love to see something more upscale go into that spot. We have so many casual dining choices in the area and it would be great to have something more formal to turn to.
I saw the email you tried posting, and there are so many reasons why a lease would not be renewed. Maybe the landlord does want something more pricey and wants to change the feel of the complex, and maybe the restaurant owners were slow to pay their rent each month.
Either way, I hope something goes in there that brings in more business for the new owners than what On The Border was seeing.

My husband has dealings with the landlord group. Yes, this is part of their future plans to have more upscale shops in Town Center, as they put it. They believe this is a gap in the current shopping experience in Charleston that they would like to go after.
