Turn left at the light after the "Welcome to Constructionland" & drive on Mathis Ferry instead of Hwy 17 next time. A few turns here & there off of Mathis & you'll see the real Mount Pleasant - but no "Main Street".

If you're coming from a large metropolitan area - come to Charleston for the charm, beaches, golfing/boating/fishing, history or the weather...but don't come to Charleston for the shopping. There are many "boutique-y" shops, but no real major department stores, i.e., Macy's, Nordstroms, Bloomingdales, etc.

The Town is working on a "walkable" area with Coleman Blvd. They are currently working on some plans for a more biker-friendly and walker-friendly Coleman Blvd. I think the area from Shem Creek all the way down to the end of Ben Sawyer will really be a great area. I'm all about food, so I'm stoked that we're adding a J Paulz, Santi's, and others to the places we already have (Mozzo, Triangle, Papa Zuzu's, Oriental Garden, Okra Grill, Bambu, etc.).

They're breaking ground on the new "Boulevard" development on Coleman and plan to have residences ready by early 2013. The building should draw some pretty great restaurants/shops. Luckily, my wife and I bought a place about 200 yards away in June, so we're really looking forward to the "revitalization" of Coleman.

I agree! A few years from now my kids will be done with their never ending extracurricular activity train, and then my husband and I would love to relocate right into that area.

Having to do business in DC on a regular basis, I can't see how anyone from there could possibly complain about Mount Pleasant traffic or strip malls. What we have here is a walk in the park compared to the nightmare that is DC.

You said it! Traffic in D.C./SoMd/NoVa is ridiculous. Traffic down here, by comparison, is like a picnic. We all get frustrated having a 10 minute drive turn into a half-hour drive due to traffic, construction, accidents, idiots in the bridge, etc. But having originally come from an area where I spent 3 hours a day, everyday, in traffic as a -normal- commute, I can happily put up with anything the Charleston roadways throw at me.

Charleston traffic is sissy traffic. While Rte 17 in MTP is a mess right now, drive it from I526 to the Isle of Palms connector and you will get a feel for how good/easy it will be when construction is over.

That area has the lightest traffic of all Hwy. 17 in the town limits.

That's good enough for me right there. My wife dragged me into Charleston for the first time several weeks ago, and I felt right at home. I relaxed. And I couldn't get enough sweet tea.
