Long ago in a galaxy....wait wrong story...um...oh right...back in 1998, my sister graduated high school and my Dad, Stepmother and grandparents came to town to do the whole graduation thing. We went to dinner downtown and parked in one of the pay lots where you stick money in a box. When we got there we put the money in and the guys got there to empty the boxes before we walked out of the lot. My granddad jokingly said "We just paid. You aren't going to empty the box and then come back and boot us right?" They said no. We went to dinner and came back Both cars were booted.
We called the number and the guys came back wanted the $20 or $25 each to unboot the cars until my dad reminded them who we were by saying "Remember my father asked if you were going to empty the box and then boot us?" "OH RIGHT!" The boots came off and we went home.
You're lucky. Most of the time you will be told that a fee MUST be paid to have the boot removed, and it can be contested later. Then you are ignored and/or given the runaround about getting your money back.
I'm usually only downtown in the evenings or on weekends so this may not apply but I normally park off the beaten path in the residential areas and then walk to wherever I need to go. The downtown is small enough that you can walk from just about anywhere in my opinion. If I'm hanging out near Market Street/East Bay, I usually find a spot just south of Broad pretty easily. If I'm more on the northern end of town, there's a cheap lot near Music Farm that's like $3 in the evenings.
I learned the hard way. The signs are very confusing because they post several parking signs on one pole. I parked where the sign said 2 hour parking and loading zone only. The sign was located about 100 feet from the corner by a tree. I took it as loading zone from the tree to the corner and 2 hr parking in front of the tree. I guess I was wrong because when we came back 30 minutes later, there was a $45 ticket on my windshield.
Why do they make it so confusing? Is there anyway to fight these tickets and get them thrown out or even reduced? I was told to not pay it but if I return to Charleston to park in one of the garages or parking lots. If I knew I could not park there, I would have never parked there.
Good news, just got a letter in the mail today, the ticket has been dismissed.
Thank you Charleston
Parked there at night to go to a concert...
came back to tire boot....$35
I parked there several times with no trouble, but the last time...booted. It took me five minutes to remove my wheel, wiggle the cheapo boot off, toss it into the bushes, and remount the wheel. We took pictures and put em on Facebook. I won't park there again, though.
