I have been watching satellite data tracking a 16'/3400+ pound great white named "Mary Lee" swimming off our coast for the past week. Turns out the satellite pinged yesterday afternoon on the interior creek of Daniel Island. She has since swam down to Savannah. A couple days ago she was cruising around Bulls Bay. She made her way down here from Cape Cod following the shelf and spend a good bit of time circling offshore Charleston...must have been some good food out there. She then shot in to Bulls bay, was just off the beach at IOP on Saturday, and up Beresford Creek yesterday. Looking at the tide charts she evidently followed the high tide and most likely left with the tide as well.
She has since left and already made it south to Savannah.
I don't know how accurate their tracking information is, but this is quite amazing.
To follow the track of the shark, follow the link above and then click on the dot that shows up on our south east coast...that will be Mary Lee. Click "View More" and her stat sheet will pop up on the right side of the screen. Scroll down that sheet and click on "Where Have I Been?" Then you can follow her individual satellite pings.
I do question just how accurate their gps is though, that is a pretty shallow creek up that far even at high tide a 16' Great White would be just below the surface and almost dragging her belly on the bottom, maybe she was birthing a baby in the shallows?
I think two to three feet is all they need. And you can't see the bottom in that much Atlantic Ocean water. I'll stick with the water moccasins in Lake Murray.
This would be why I swim in pools. I actually will go into the ocean in the Caribbean but that's about it. Got to be able to see my feet. I'll fish those waters all day long but swim?? Nope.
