I am in the interview phase of a job hunt. The offer is with an airline, but the salary is going to be considerably less than what I made in my last airline leadership position. Long-story-short, it seems like a good opportunity to get back in an industry that I love, with growth potential. My question is, how hard will it be for a single mom of one daughter to live in a safe, decent area on $40k/year? And, if this is feasible, any thoughts on where to house/apt hunt? Job will be at the CHS airport.

$40k is doable but you will not be close to the beaches or in a new house. There are places around where I live that are safe and affordable, homes for <$120K....

That gives me a little hope, thank you! What is the area - maybe I can do some research online?

I'd consider looking into some of the areas in Ladson, right next to historic summerville. Communities like Buckshire, summerhaven, summerpark, lakes of summerville, even the Wescott area.

You can search by subdivision using the Charleston SC Real Estate | carolinaonerealestate.com website.

You can find some affordable homes around there and not too far of a commute to the airport.

Crowfield Plantation (Goose Creek) has some homes for very reasonable prices. There is so many price ranges in Crowfield that you should be able to find something. Even the subdivision is divided into subdivisions so you can pick something that fits you.

My favorite property search website....

And specific to Crowfield Plantation

You can also see on the right that there are search options for all Charleston area....by price, subdivision, area, etc. You also don't have to register so it is a free for all search.
