So ten years ago when I was in school at C of C, if you were living downtown, you didn't want to live past the Crosstown (actually you didn't want to live past Cannon) and you definitely didn't want to live on the East Side (that area in between Meeting and East Bay from Mary up to the old bridge) unless you were a drug fiend or just had a death wish. Lol.
As I've looked at rentals now that we are considering relocating, it seems that a lot of the East Side has gentrified (I'm seeing $1200+/month apartments). I'm assuming that this is right around where J&W relocated? Additionally, where I used to live on Morris (off of Coming) is just not affordable for us anymore though when I lived there, we had bars on our windows. I understand that many of the areas past the Crosstown (going towards Hampton Park) have revitalized as well.
So are there still any areas that we need to stay out of? We desperately want to live downtown (I hate to drive and would be working downtown) but it may include living in some of these areas in order for us to keep our rent at $1200/month or less. Since our family is upstate, we would probably be spending a weekend up there every six weeks or so. I'm very vigilant about not being flashy with our stuff and/or taking care to make it appear as if we are home when we're not, but I don't want to come home from a weekend away to discover our door kicked in and stuff gone either. We went through that on multiple occasions while living in Columbia and I'm not eager to repeat the experience.
Just for example sake, we would be looking at something this:

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
