My husband has been stationed to the AFB in Charleston. I have accepted a job at MUSC. Where is a good place to live? We are interested in rent an apartment or townhouse and then eventually buying. We don't have any kids yet but we definitely want some in the near future. We do not want to live in the city. We want a small little town that would be good to raise children when we have them and close to the beach. I have heard the towns of Mt. Pleasant, Summerville, james Island, daniel Island but I don't know much about them.

There aren't many small little towns around here. Nearly every place just sprawls into another.

Summerville is out if you want to be close to the beach. Daniel Island is closer to the beach, but still a good 20 minutes away. You can find what you're looking for in Mt. Pleasant or James Island. Neither has a big city vibe.

I would recommend John's Island. James Island is more college kid central.

You could look at Monck's Corner too but it is a little furthur inland so probably 1 hour commute to downtown.

Of the AFB families that live off-base, most tend to live in West Ashley. My husband is military and that's where we live. Being there, that puts you in between the base and downtown. We are moving to Mt Pleasant though next year. If you can afford that area and your husband doesn't mind the commute, I would recommend that part of town.

West Ashley doesn't have enough roads for all the traffic during rush hour. I would never recoommend it for that reason.

Oh yea totally forgot about that. AFB would be fine but not for working downtown.

I'd totally disagree with that. Just go up the North Bridge and take I-26 to get into town, instead of crossing the river at Hwy 17. There's no traffic at all north of the St Andrews / Olde Towne split.

See, I don't know the different routes since I don't work downtown and still fairly new to the area. But that's good to know.
