Comcast has allowed Charleston's market to flounder for years and the mayor wants to support even more of it?
Due to the already lack of competition in our market, Comcast selected Charleston to be one of several southern cities targeted for data cap trials. Our market has caps that other markets don't yet we get to pay the same rates. Further, they tell the FCC they don't have these caps, but rather 'data thresholds'.
We have a horribly outdated service plant, one of the last in the country to get upgrades, data caps and our mayor wants to support the merger of Comcast (who also owns content via NBC and Universal Studios) and Time Warner Cable. This would make them the single largest cable, internet, and telephone provider in the country along with owning a large portion of content. And what has Comcast done to take advantage of their already large presence? Limit peering bandwidth so you get poor Netflix picture quality and begin to push capped plus overage billing.
The mayor could have a half decent argument had there been a long history of excellent product service to our community, but to support a company that has put you last on their list repeatedly for years just smacks of political buyout. It honestly makes me ashamed. I know we shouldn't expect more from our politicians.. but why not? Why can't we expect at least some level of integrity?
The letter these guys signed was directly from published talking points from Comcast's lead lobbyist. They can't even do their own work LOL.
It's a common mis-perception that our political leaders are well meaning but inept. In fact they are neither.
Kind of love that and just might steal it for future use!
