does anyone have a home automation system installed in their home?
I'm interested in motion detection w/video monitoring and HVAC control

what system do you have and how is the wireless reliability? I'm thinking of going this route instead of hard-wired

is there a reputable company in the Charleston area that sells/services Z-Wave and Zigbee products ?

Insteon Smarthome Home Automation Superstore

Go with a isy994i which will control insteon and you can add zigbee or zwave automation control.

However, video surveillance tends to be separate from home automation. Not always, but most of the time.

Be sure to look at the whole picture of not just what you want to do today, but where you may want to expand your system if you like it. Door locks, garage door sensors, lighting controls and level, environmental sensors to help control sprinkler systems, hvac, water leak alarming, door triggers, etc are all options but you want them to integrate and be controlled from a single scene or event manager. In the past this was done by a dedicated computer systems running in the background. The Isy can now perform all this from a single device so a computer isnt required.

I would suggest not just going to Sams and picking one up.
