As far as being "edgy", I just can't see that happening. Ever.

The nice part is that I can take it anywhere. I'm thinking Charleston looks like a gorgeous town but may not have the urban edge we are looking for. So back to the drawing board. Still looking at Houston but I'm worried the layoffs from the oil biz may create a glut of IT people there as well. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Something tells me that you would only be happy in a big city. By "big city" I mean any city that has pro baseball and football. Houston is probably the least expensive big city in the country. You should also look at Philadelphia. You get a lot for your bucks in that the cost of living there is not bad for the east coast, that is if you live within the city limits. In the suburbs, the real estate taxes are outrageously high.

It's not a "big"city, but Pittsburgh might be a place to look. I know that sounds crazy, but there's a lot happening there right now.
